There are so many beautiful places for engagement photos in Philadelphia, but I find myself recommending Rittenhouse Square again and again. Maybe it’s because Rittenhouse Square engagement photos offer a little bit of everything. You have the gardens and tree-lined paths right in the square, but just around the corner are charming side streets, beautiful brownstones, and some of my favorite spots in the city for portraits. I also love that photos here never feel rushed. We can simply walk, talk, and let the evening unfold naturally. If you’re thinking about planning a Rittenhouse Square engagement session, here are a few things I think every couple should know.

Some engagement locations are beautiful, but they could be almost anywhere. Rittenhouse Square feels distinctly Philadelphia. The historic homes, brick sidewalks, charming rowhouses, and beautiful architecture all give the neighborhood so much character. If you love the city and want your engagement photos to feel connected to the place where you’re building your life together, it’s hard to find a more fitting location.
One of my favorite things about Rittenhouse Square engagement photos is how many different looks we can create without ever needing to drive to another location. We can begin among the gardens and greenery in the square, wander down a side street, stop in front of a beautiful historic building, and end the evening outside a favorite cafĂ©. The entire session feels relaxed because we’re simply exploring together rather than racing from one location to another. As a photographer, I love when sessions have room to breathe.

Even though you’re right in the middle of the city, there is so much greenery throughout Rittenhouse Square. The mature trees and seasonal flowers bring a softness to the photographs that balances beautifully with the surrounding architecture. Especially in the spring and summer months, the square feels lush and romantic. I love incorporating both the gardens and the city into a session because it gives couples a gallery with so much variety while still feeling cohesive. You get the charm of Philadelphia along with the softness of a garden setting all in one location.
I always tell my couples that engagement photos should be an experience, not just another thing to cross off your wedding planning checklist. One of my favorite things about Rittenhouse Square engagement photos is that it’s incredibly easy to turn your session into a date night. Make dinner reservations nearby, grab a drink afterward, or stop for coffee before heading home. Those moments often become part of the memory of the session itself. Years from now, I want my couples to remember not only the photographs we created, but also how they felt spending an evening together during this season of their lives.

Because Rittenhouse Square is such a beloved part of the city, it can get busy, especially on weekends. If your schedule allows, I often recommend planning your session on a weekday or earlier in the morning. The square feels a bit quieter, and we have more freedom to move around and enjoy the space.
Rittenhouse Square naturally lends itself to a timeless, slightly elevated look. You certainly don’t need to be overly formal, but classic pieces, soft colors, and outfits that feel polished yet comfortable photograph beautifully here. Most importantly, wear something that feels like you. The best photographs happen when couples feel comfortable and confident.

As a Philadelphia engagement photographer, I’ve photographed in so many beautiful locations throughout the city, but Rittenhouse Square remains one of my favorites. It offers the perfect mix of gardens, charming city streets, but more than anything, it gives couples space to slow down and simply enjoy being together. And at the end of the day, that’s really what engagement photos are about. If you’re planning your engagement session and considering Rittenhouse Square engagement photos, I would love to hear more about your story.
