One of the most common questions I receive from couples planning their Philadelphia engagement photo outfits is what they should wear. It’s a practical question, but it’s also an important one. The right clothing can complement the location and help you feel comfortable and confident throughout the session. The goal is never to look like someone else or follow a trend simply because it’s popular. Instead, I always encourage couples to choose pieces that feel like an elevated version of themselves.
Philadelphia summers can bring warm temperatures and humidity, which means comfort matters just as much as style. Fortunately, the two don’t have to compete. With a little planning, it’s entirely possible to create a look that feels timeless and comfortable enough to enjoy every moment of your session.

When couples think about engagement photos, they often focus first on the location. While that certainly contributes to the final images, what you wear has just as much influence on the overall feel of your gallery.
The most timeless engagement photographs are rarely defined by trendy clothing choices. Instead, they are often built around outfits that allow the couple to remain the focus. Years from now, when you look back at these photographs, you want to remember this season of your relationship—not the fashion trend that happened to be popular at the time.
Summer engagement sessions are always more enjoyable when you’re comfortable. I typically recommend lightweight fabrics such as linen, cotton, chiffon, or other breathable materials that allow movement and airflow.
Structured pieces certainly have their place, but heavy fabrics can sometimes feel restrictive during warm summer sessions. Choosing clothing that moves naturally often helps couples feel more relaxed, which ultimately shows in the final images.
Philadelphia offers an incredible variety of engagement session locations. Because of that, I often encourage couples to choose color palettes that complement these surroundings rather than compete with them.
Soft neutrals, creams, light blues, sage greens, dusty rose tones, and warm earth tones tend to photograph beautifully throughout the city. These colors pair naturally with both Philadelphia’s historic architecture and summer greenery. I generally suggest avoiding neon colors or anything overly bold that might distract from the connection between you and your partner.

If you’re planning your engagement session in locations along some of Philadelphia’s historic streets, a slightly more elevated look often works beautifully.
The goal isn’t necessarily to dress up as much as possible. Rather, it’s to choose pieces that feel polished and intentional while still allowing you to move comfortably throughout the session. The timeless architecture and historic character found throughout Philadelphia pair especially well with classic wardrobe choices.
For sessions taking place in outdoor locations, I often encourage couples to lean into softer textures and lighter color palettes.
Flowing dresses and relaxed linen pieces complement natural surroundings beautifully. The movement these pieces create often adds an additional layer of romance to photographs, particularly during golden hour. Nature-focused sessions also tend to feel a bit more relaxed overall, which gives couples more flexibility to choose outfits that feel comfortable and reflective of their personalities.
While there are very few hard rules when it comes to engagement session attire, there are a few things I generally encourage couples to avoid.
Heavy layers and thick fabrics can quickly become uncomfortable during Philadelphia summers. Large logos, busy patterns, and overly trendy pieces can also draw attention away from the people in the photographs.
I also recommend thinking carefully about darker colors during particularly warm sessions. While there is absolutely a place for navy, charcoal, or black in certain wardrobes, lighter tones often feel more seasonally appropriate and can be more comfortable in the summer heat.

At the end of the day, the best engagement session outfits are the ones that allow you to feel comfortable enough to focus on one another. When couples feel comfortable, confident, and genuinely present with one another, that is what creates meaningful photographs.
